Impro run of constellations thursday pm

  • great change of dynamics when paige run into a scene
  • chris and paige lovely mirroring
  • lovely moment of harry and zoe stillness; others mirroring, others just watching while y&d continuing their scene is silence with umbrella
  • lovel ytaking umbrella to other couple
  • Do we need beginning where you all do the same to establish same characters? Or do we open with a film on string theory?
  • the mirroring needs to sometimes be exactly uncannily precise
  • LAMPS NEED TO BE MOVABLE? POSSIBLE?
  • lovely moment when zoe moved to other stillness and harry stayed the same
  • Chris half way through the longer scene, move to another partner. Paige remain reacting to him just as if he was there
  • We need to be careful not to confuse audience; the convention of mirroring with difference can mean you are playing the subtext. we mean it to be another universe possibility
  • again, lovely stillness between zoe and harry where only zoe moves
  • the first line of 'james and i had sex', do we need all lamps coming on? or too much?
  • chris lovely delivery of i was at the pub
  • jonathan lovely mirroring;
  • WE NEED SOME UNIFORM GESTURES: what can they be? a tired gesture, a greeting? a laugh.
  • some lovely motifs: Yvette lying down on Dan, laura and James looking at the start.
  • Maybe some couples drink before we get to drunk scene?
  • Paige great image lying on chair looking at the stars? see photo.

  • NEED A drunk acting exercise workshop
  • WE really need another actor to learn to sign a scene. It's written in the script too.
  • some very engaging truthful acting. How do we sustain that but up the volume for the theatre?
  • lovely fight/tender scene G & Sam
  • What props might we need to signify locations? Sieve, pillow, umbrella, tv control???
  • Lovely move to non naturalism chris.
  • MAIN REVELATIONS; KEY MOMENTS; i have a wife , I slept with Jamie, The Tumour, I got engaged………

  • yvette and paige lovely trouser front scene
  • sam lovely picking up of joke of inferno and changing atmosphere
  • lovely moment towards end, harry rushes 'hello jamie' and lots of boys flock with
  • dance from yvette and dan gave me an idea: should one couple be dancing different kind of dances throughout? one of you? or we could even have another say 2nd years couple on stage dancing throughout?
  • lovely other hands comedy G. ok to have that kind of comedy? it changes pace and is funny….
  • Can it rain on one couple but not another? could that be a catalyst in different choices made and make sense of umbrellas?
  • Idea for ending. Same opening as beginning. All couples in their lights/lamps but without some Jamies…
  • Another idea: if one of the revelations happens on phone. That also a reason why the choice changes. EG he didn't see her face to see what she meant so same words but different reactions to other couple that did it face to face.
  • lovely concentration of typing up paper Paige
  • Chris excellent changing of pace again. WE need to make sure we do that or the repetition becomes tiring.
  • WHAT IS THE POINT of the bee speech?

  • Lovely queen Bee Dan
  • Great idea to make rain sounds on umbrella chris
  • lovely scene laura and jamie on tumour; underplayed and truthful. Poignant that you played uno throughout.

  • what is uno, is it significant? good metaphor?
  • great throwing the cards at laura jamie
  • Sam & G yes that much anger about handbag great to change mood so dynamically
  • What do we want from the ending? What does the ENDING MEAN?????

  1. I personally think we should clearly establish at the beginning of the play, that there are only 2 characters, and the play is about different outcomes and universes and not different personalities/characters. We could do this by giving Roland and Jamie significant gestures. Which is a Brechtian technique. This gesture could be subtle, like the walk or a habit the character has. Or could be more obvious, such as the way they talk/laugh or maybe their posture and how the character holds themselves.

  2. yes i think you are right, let's keep thinking how we do that and upload any videos of your ideas how to perform it.

  3. I felt the impro run through was positive. This was the first time we did not use script which was challenging. Although some of the lines are missed I felt this did not matter because it was more important to get a feel for how to group interacted and shared new ideas such as mirroring and using props. I feel that at the moment it is not clear that there are only two characters in the play the audience could find this confusing. We need to explore ways to make this clear . I like the idea of using similar costumes. I agree with Zoe maybe we could think of ways to use similar gestures for each character.

  4. Now that we have a big chunk of clay, I can now begin playing and shaping it however we want.
I was thinking for the ending, we could maybe show the different outcomes of each pair as a freeze frame or something. The ending could mean that every choice you make and anything you do or say will affect the outcome of the future.
I feel like the "uniform gesture" are necessary to have. It would help showing that we're playing the same characters. They could probably be gesture influenced by their job.
I was thinking if there could be some sort of movement sequence or a melody to go from one scene to another as a transition. It might give the feeling of different parallel universes.
I came across an experimental idea we could try. We could have one scene without lines what so ever (meaning no speech). It would be good to see how we would communicate our lines in different ways. This could be done as an exercise that I believe could lead to potentially more ideas.
